Using the site is easy and fun. Somehow, I now have nothing but "square" boxes on my desktop. However, after switching on Optimus (using the built-in Intel GPU to drive the display) and disabling the NVIDIA card, the problem still occurs, so I'm pretty sure it's not that.

I posted to this thread then about what worked for me... A restart might be all Windows needs to get back on track. TL;DR If your computer is freezing after installing an SSD change from AHCI to IDE mode in the BIOS. Once complete, restart your computer and attempt the update process again.
After a minute or two the screen refreshes and all works again. The reporting messages are often techno-cryptic in nature (difficult for a casual user to understand), but you never know. But then I found out immediately that it wasn't compatible because my AMD Athlon processor have only a bus frequency limit of 266 so I change it back before 24 hrs.. The freezing first occurred last night in which the mouse is still moveable, but everything else on the screen is frozen.
